![]() ![]() ![]() I really enjoyed Sorrentino’s work in this one. ![]() Andrea Sorrentino’s art certainly helps maintain that atmosphere! Logan is a broken, desperate man willing to do brutal things to keep what he thinks is his future from happening.ĭespite colourful cameos from Amadeus Cho Hulk, Kate Bishop Hawkeye and Old Man Cap (and I love that we got to see these two old geezer versions of the characters meeting), the tone of the story is very grim. Like a lot of his books, Millar’s Old Man Logan was really, really dark and, surprisingly, Lemire’s kept the tone here - this is one of the darkest non-MAX Marvel books I’ve read. ![]() He just has to kill the Incredible Hulk…! Not realising he’s in a different universe, Old Man Logan thinks he’s time-travelled to before the world became a wasteland and he’s been given a second chance to save everyone: the heroes and his family. Originally a standalone (and I know this is a DC term but it’s fitting) “Elseworlds”-type story by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven from 2008-09, the character and world was revisited in a Brian Bendis-written miniseries during last year’s Secret Wars and now it’s an ongoing. Old Man Logan is the best Wolverine story bar none. Just when I’d written off Jeff Lemire he comes out with a really good superhero comic - and of course it’d be for a fellow Canuck like Wolverine! ![]()

We can divide it into simple parts, measure it, arrange dinner by it, drink whisky to its passage. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() To promote Devon’s natural abilities and further her competitive fitness, the Knoxes have made tremendous personal and financial sacrifices. Devon is the highlight of her high school’s gymnastics program because her talent is potentially so limitless that even the Olympics isn’t too lofty a goal. The Knox family – father Eric, mother Katie, fifteen-year-old Devon, and younger brother, Drew – live in a small, nondescript town. Told from the point of view of her mother, whose intense knowledge of her daughter’s body and its capabilities belies her complete denial of her daughter’s interior life, the novel asks what parents – and a surrounding community – are willing to do to protect the child stars that put them on the map. The novel has quite a few things to say about us as human beings and the decent thing for us to do is to just have a listen. No, it is a remarkable novel with a potent story, an interesting, attention-grabbing cast of characters, and it is not a volume that disappoints. It is not a typical fluffy romance that is there just to make the reader feel good for the length of the novel and have no intention of ever picking up. ![]() Fallen Crest High, the novel, is the first in the series and it was published in the year of 2012. The series is composed of a total of seven novels and a couple of tie-ins, too. It is a part of Tijan’s well-known and beloved series called Fallen Crest High. This is undoubtedly one of the best Tijan Meyer novels that readers have been blessed to read. ![]() ![]() It is through these characters that Sofer conveys the yearning of a people for a country that exists only in their memories of its smells, sounds, and faded photographs. ![]() In The Septembers of Shiraz, Dalia Sofer has, with extraordinary skill, woven together a cast of characters replete with endearing qualities and rife with character flaws and shortcomings. The prosperous Amin family, Jewish, yet not religious, is guilty of a crime that is unforgivable in Ayatollah-ruled Iran: they had lived a life of luxury, doing business and fraternizing with the aristocracy during the rule of the Shah, rendering them despicable and deserving of punishment in the eyes of the recently empowered Mullahs and their followers. ![]() Simultaneous with the overthrow of the Shah by Islamic militants, nine-year-old Shirin Amin’s life is thrown into a Kafkaesque decline, as her father Issac is jailed and tortured by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, and her mother’s carefree and luxurious life and material trappings are both literally and figuratively torn apart. ![]() ![]() ![]() As the flashbacks continue, they close the gap with the present day, revealing a family struggle. Sunny’s original plans for the summer were a shore house visit with the family and a friend. The ridiculous wonder of the concepts, the easy heroism, the colorful appearances, the sound of the spinner rack, the imaginative escape all grab her attention. Sunny isn’t the only kid around Buzz, the groundskeeper’s son, introduces her to comic books, a part of this almost-memoir that many readers will identify with. The bright colors represent sunshine and summer, and individual moments are funny. The reader quickly understands that time and place while noting the universal elements of spending time with grandparents. I like the way Holm easily moves between establishing elements of the setting and details of daily life. The art is friendly, deceptively simple in a way that makes it approachable. As the story progresses, though, the reader learns more about why Sunny’s really there, and how the weight of what she’s been asked to hide wears on her. Seems ok, although she has trouble adapting to the slow pace of life in his retirement community. It’s the 70s, and Sunny’s been sent to spend the summer with Gramps. ![]() ![]() Holm and Matthew Holm unspool a semi-autobiographical story about family that packs a sucker-punch, in that you won’t see it coming but it will leave you with a new perspective on how we hurt others.
